History of United blind of Seattle
The United Blind of Seattle(UBS) is one of the oldest affiliated chapters of the Washington Council of the Blind.
We began as a meeting of students at the University of Washington. Later, as membership increased, the group needed a bigger place to meet, and a local church offered meeting space. This all happened in the 1970s. By 1980, United Blind of Seattle was formally affiliated with the Washington Council of the Blind. Today, UBS partners with cross disability coalitions and advocates to improve funding for the Washington Talking Book and Braille Library, to secure the availability of accessible ballots, to improve the accessibility of transportation across King County and across the State, and much more.
UBS members testify at the legislature, sit on city and state boards promoting access, and work with private and public entities to ensure the human rights of all persons who are blind or low vision. All members of our Board of Directors are blind or low vision.
